Home Made Energy Bars
These bars are very quick and simple to make and we prefer these to energy bars or gels. The oats and agave syrup are low GI, giving nice slow releasing energy where the sugar gives a nice quick hit! Make sure you use Muscovado sugar as other sugars don’t stick the bars together very well.
You will need:
250g porridge oats
170g stoned dates
75g muscovado sugar
3tbsp agave nectar
30g chopped nuts
The great thing with these bars is you can add anything you like. If you don’t like dates, swap for any dried fruit. Quite often we’ll swap the nuts for sunflower or pumpkin seeds. Practically anything works.
Pre-heat the oven to 140*C (fan assisted)
Heat the butter and sugar in a saucepan until melted. Keep it on a low heat as it is very easy to burn the sugar.
Once melted, add the agave nectar, porridge oats, stoned dates and chopped nuts and thoroughly mix together.
Line a baking tray with grease proof paper, pour in mixture and evenly spread. We tend to use a 12″ x 7″ tray as this makes the bars about on 1″ thick.
Stick in the oven for 20 minutes.
Cut into slices and leave to cool.
Once cool individually wrap tightly in cling film.
